Global Positioning Systems (GPS) was originally developed by the US Armed Forces to help with naval and overland navigation. GPS uses a constellation of satellites to beam down encoded time signatures to receivers on the surface. By tracking the delay between when the time code says the signal was sent and when it actually arrived, GPS uses Einstein's theory of relativity and four signals (three if altitude is known) to provide accurate tracking down to about two meters. GPS technology has been moving into the commercial sphere from the military since the 1990s.GPS fleet tracking systems are used in public transportation, most notably school buses in Kansas City and New York City. These systems allow school districts to know exactly where each bus is, thus improving the safety of their passengers. On flex routes, GPS gives drivers some leeway in adjusting their course to avoid traffic congestion. The secondary benefit is that it allows the school districts in question to better assess idle times, better routing algorithms and fuel efficiency. School officials and parents have a peace of mind knowing that the school buses are monitored constantly.
In April 2007, a private taxi company launched a fleet of 150 GPS-enabled metered taxis (or Meru taxis) in Mumbai, India. Customers will be able to call for a taxi at to pick up at a preferred location and book in advance on the phone or internet. If a customer accidentally left any personal item in a taxi, this GPS technology can track to the specific taxi quickly and easily. All collected Meru taxi fares are transmitted back to the control centre and monitored to ensure that customers are charged appropriately. The company plans to increase the fleet to 1,000 taxis by year end.In the commercial sector, GPS is used for tracking delivery trucks and trucks used by contractors going to job sites. This allows real time monitoring of what trucks are en route and better tracking of actual mileage used (versus what's billed for). This also increases fleet wide fuel economy, and allows employers to check the actual hours driven by drivers in a day for mileage bonuses and "drive time" pay. H.A. Sun Heating and Cooling Inc. of Bloomfield, Mich. is an example of a company that installed GPS fleet tracking system in every of its truck. The company is able to access real time information that leads to savings in manpower costs (from people claiming they were on a shift for 8 hours, when the GPS showed that they'd only driven for seven and a half), reduced fuel costs and increased productivity and efficient truck routing. For this company, the GPS paid for itself in 30 days.GPS fleet tracking system has been proven to increase efficiency and productivity in all types of businesses that own fleet of vehicles. In addition to cost and time savings, customer satisfaction is significantly improved through better responsiveness.

Anyone interested in aviation will need an aviation headset as well as some knowledge about GPS and how it assists pilots. One of the best GPS on the market for aviation is Garmin aviation GPS. The following information will show how the Garmin aviation GPS works and why it is important for pilots.First of all, GPS stands for Global Positioning System. GPS relies on a network of 24 satellites to assist in navigation. The satellites are in space thanks to the US Department of Defense however everyone can use the technology if they have a GPS system thanks to the system becoming available in the 80s for use by al. GPS works despite the weather, location, and time of day. GPS is free to use although the actual device to detect the signal must be purchased. The satellites in space that are used for GPS circle the earth two times every day in a fixed orbit. The information that is gathered is then transmitted back to the earth. GPS receivers like the Garmin aviation GPS then receive the information. Once the information is received by the receiver triangulation is utilized to determine the specific location of the user. It’s interesting how GPS actually works because with so much transmitting and time difference it would seem the Garmin GPS could get it wrong. However the receiver simply notes the time a signal was received by a satellite in comparison to the time it was sent. The difference in time allows the receiver to determine how far away the satellite is in space. Additional satellites provide more distance measurements and the exact position of the user is then displayed on the electronic map. So, when you are flying and using Garmin aviation GPS you can easily determine where you are at all times thanks to the satellites, receiver, and lots of transmissions.
Fortunately, GPS is unbelievably accurate and users can count on the GPS system to give them accurate information. The reason why it is so accurate is due to parallel multi channel design. Garmin’s receivers offer 12 parallel channels and as soon as the receiver is turned on the signal is picked up and locked onto. Then, no matter whether the user is in a location with tall buildings or lots of foliage the lock is maintained. There are some things that may change the accuracy of Garmin GPS including atmospheric changes. However, on average, these receivers have an accuracy of 15 meters.

Navigating wastelands pose numerous problems – even with a GPS device. Scarce landmarks mixed with undulating sand dunes challenge even the best navigators attempting to chart a course. In addition, the underlying danger of hidden canyons to navigate around heightens the degree of difficulty.Luckily GPS devices can help you navigate a clear path through the desert. Since vegetation is sporadic, your device will have continuous communication with satellites – unlike trekking though densely covered forests that block signal paths. Using waypoints, one can easily chart distances in the desert which can then be indicated on maps that truly reflect the landscape. Distances are difficult to judge in the desert since usual points of reference (steep drop-offs, unusual tree formations, etc.) are all but absent. To get around this, identify any landmark that is easily distinguished from the background and indicate it as a waypoint on the GPS unit. Seek out one more and indicate that point as well. From those two waypoints distance can be calculated. Judging distance with the naked eye alone can be deceptive. Since desert topography shifts more than forested areas, maps can contain erroneous information. Nevertheless, using a paper map and a GPS unit allows you to indicate on the paper map the locations of erratic landscapes and places to avoid on the way back, which leads to a safer crossing of the desert. Taking along a GPS can save your life if used wisely. But it can also carry a false sense of security. Bring your GPS unit but also remember to do the following: • Always check weather conditions and routes thoroughly before setting off into the dusty horizon. Conditions can change rapidly so check them often..• If traveling by car, remember to check the oil and gas at the last stop.• Bring road and trail maps that correspond to your GPS maps and waypoints.• Bring at least a gallon of water per person per day. • Never set off into the desert alone. Use the buddy system and inform others of your whereabouts.• Bring extra batteries for your GPS unit - its not just your body that can become overheated.Since most areas in North America have been explored, finding a detailed GPS map to bring with you for any of the four major desert systems causes no problem. However, even if you have all the necessities for your trek into the barren lands, remember each desert is different and contains unique dangers.

When you are lost and you cannot find your way it is a good idea to have a GPS tracking system in your car, you will receive directions on how to get to the place you need to get to. Above the earth there are many satellites orbiting the earth that are continually communicating and providing information about where the vehicle is located on the earth.GPS or Global Positioning System tracks your location by interpreting the data received from 3 or more satellites. Since the invention of the cell phone, cell phone companies are able to help the authorities for many years by triangulated the position of someones cell phone by using there signal and the cell towers. Many cars and trucks are able to record the location and speed of the vehicle and is able to transmit this information back to the office. There are many different types of GPS tracking systems, and many companies are manufacturing them. There are so many different kinds of handheld GPS systems, one kind has a built in radio which allows you to communicate with each other but also allows you see the position of all the other people on your screen, this is good for hikers to keep in contact with each other. The governmental agency (FCC) has instructed GPS system providers to help with 911 calls for those people who are lost and need to be traced and tracked. The GPS systems are so advanced now it allows the proper authorities to track locations for 911 emergency calls; this is only allowed when there is an emergency and will not be used on a daily basis. Many automobiles are being equipped with passive GPS tracking, these system will record the location and the drivers speed, this information can be used later on for statistical information. A vehicle’s location is updated at intervals of between 2 - 15 minutes. There are many types of GPS vehicle tracking; wireless passive, cellular and satellite systems that can track in a real time basis. When talking about a cellular based system, these systems transmit the vehicles information over a land network every 5 minutes.GPS vehicle tracking systems are more affordable and more popular than ever before, but do you need one. Many business are starting to use GPS systems that track their vehicles so they know where each vehicles it. Many car manufactures are including these GPS systems in their cars and trucks. GPS tracking systems are used by businesses in the service, transportation and manufacturing industries. There are other types of GPS or global positioning systems can help give you peace of mind in knowing when your pet has crossed outside the safety zone of the backyard, or somewhere in your neighborhood. Many pet tracker system use GPS technology to keep track of your pets, these devices are so small they are able to fit into the pets collar. GPS tracking system do cost more depending on the brand name, but the features and functionality are well worth it.

Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are growing in rapidly popularity and are becoming an everyday navigational tool. You commonly see GPS installed in a vehicle but it is also available in a hand help form that is similar to size of a pocket PC or cell phone. GPS units have the ability to be loaded with map data of any where in the world. A GPS uses a series of satellites to pinpoint your exact location with amazing accuracy. There are more sophisticated systems that have the ability to determine you position on the ground as well as an altitude reading. GPS units have grown so much in popularity that it forced the prices down to a reasonable amount as long as you are looking for a basic unit that provides you with your latitude and longitude. If you want more features you can go with a more expensive sophisticated unit. Considering there is such a large range of options on a GPS unit need to determine what you will be using the system for before purchasing. Garmin is the world’s top manufacturer of GPS unit. Those who are purchasing a GPS unit to aid while they are hiking should go with a waterproof design for when you are crossing rivers and to protect you if you were to get stuck in a storm. Some models have different numbers of waypoints which is another word for terrestrial coordinates such as latitude, longitude, and altitude. Basic waypoints are effective for the majority of hikers but you can always upgrade to a model that offers more features. A popular Garmin GPS model for hikers is the eTrex because it is lightweight, waterproof, and has the ability to display up to five hundred waypoints. This device also features a number of controls on the side which gives you the ability to control the size of the display.A Garmin Aviation GPS is fully equipped with Jeppesen databases as well as background land mapping. The newest GPS has log-book compatible features which make flight reporting much easier. Most Garmin GPS units range from one hundred to three hundred dollars, but there are some systems that are priced well above the three hundred mark. Purchasing GPS units is just like any other electrical device; you get what you pay for. If you spend around two hundred dollars you are able to get a device that is suitable for hiking.
The Casio consumer GPS wrist watch was first introduced the world in Las Vegas, the year was 1999. the global positioning system technology has been in place since the late 70s and has become invaluable. When GPS watches first became available to the market, they were quite expensive. However, like most great technology GPS watches are now affordable to everyone at very reasonable prices.GPS watches serve many purposes. A very common use of the GPS watch is for the those who train outdoors. A good GPS watch will include an altimeter for those who need to measure elevation. Another more common feature of the GPS watch is the heart rate monitor, which is essential for those who monitor there vital signs while training. The GPS can keep track of your starting point and finishing point , and with data acquired as you train, you will now know how much time has elapsed and exactly how far you have gone.Whether you are walking, hiking, climbing or riding a bike, the GPS watch can help you with planning these endevours. This is also a great way to create maps. Some offer the option to show you terrain, and sometimes even denote construction areas to make planning your trip more efficient.
